Lean Line Design For Pump Manufacturing

This paper discusses the study carried out for proposing a one human race lean line layout with features of lean manufacturing for the manufacturing of Monoblock Pump Elements used in diesel fuel dig pumps. An element consists of a diver and a Barrier that forms the fuel inlet and control components of an injection pump. The paper discusses critical analysis of the existing conventional layout and the designing of a lean line for the same process. The methodology adopt is consistent with the principles of Bosch turnout Systems, which borrows heavily from the Toyota Production Systems, who are considered the pioneers in Lean Manufacturing. Our study adopts an approach based on the conceit of customer takt time that aims at designing the process and the layout retentiveness in mind the rate of customer demand. This is a holistic approach as it helps focus on the customers and only those activities that directly add value to the customers requirements.

It also provides for incorporating kanban-pull systems, self-activating material handling and online inspection in an attempt to ameliorate the productivity, quality and reduce the operating costs. As a turn up of our study, we have successfully devised a lean line for the shape of Monoblock pump elements and have accomplished a 31.17% decrease in space, 48.35% reduction in material movement and a 41.53% reduction in operator movement and also achieved one plot of land flow of work that eliminates the accumulation of WIP.
