In the time, approximately 1600 A.D., Sir Walter Raleigh wrote a reply to an earlier poem compose by Christopher Marlowe. Marlowes The Passionate Shepherd to His Love was a poem that speak of love as a sacred union, A tog made of the finest wool, which from our pretty lambs we pull (Marlowe, p. 1022). Marlowes extensive education and raffish ways of life, are seen throughout this poem. When Marlow wrote poetry or plays he took his emotion; be sorrow, fear, or in this case love, and he amplified it. Marlowes choice to use the words Passionate Shepherd in his title gives a foreshadowing of how much the shepherd adores his love. In contrast, Sir Walter Raleigh, a well known member at court, has a much more cynical view of love in his reply to Marlowes The Passionate Shepherd to his Love.

Raleighs A Nymphs Reply to the Shepherd speaks of love as something that withers and dies as time moves, But could youth last and love mollify breed, Had joys no date nor age no need (Raleigh, p 918). Raleigh was a pioneer of sorts, replies were not common in this time period, and used much of his work to spread his electrical resistance against many societal norms. Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh, although very different, had a few similarities seen in the two poems previously mentioned.
