SOLD: A BOOK REPORT
Sold is a diachronic fiction novel written by Patricia McCormick that portrays the
horrible atrocities of poverty. It inside information some of the lengths that some people will go to
armed service support family. Also, it displays some of the deceit that goes along with having to
support family, and satisfy debt.
In Patricia McCormicks sorrowful and well-written young adult novel, the
waking nightmare that young Nepalese girls experience after being interchange into sexual
slavery is told through the intelligent eyes of 13-year-old Lakshmi. Her family loses
the runty it has in a monsoon. She was willingly taken from her loving household in the
mountains of Nepal to be a ladys maid and provide for her innocent family.
However, Lakshmi soon discovers that her life will actually be sensation of
prostitution, indentured servitude, and beatings. She ends up in a brothel farther
across the border in the slums of Calcutta, locked up, beaten, starved, drugged,
raped, torn and bleeding, until she submits.
Though horribly cheated by the evil
madam, Lakshmi keeps careful accounts of her earnings and makes friends with
a little boy who teaches her to read Hindi and English.
The boy, Harish, who runs errands for the girls and their clients begins to
teach her to read makes her feel a bit more alive. She remembers what it feels
like to be the number wizard girl in class again. When an American comes to the
brothel to obstetrical delivery girls, Lakshmi finally fastens a sense of hope.
The relationship between this throw and our class is the sheer reality of it.
