The piece above stood step forward to me initially because of the subject matter. It is an image I have elaten in the lead when learning about the America Civil War. The black and neat ikon is capturing the dead passs lying on a battle battleground after the Battle at Gettysburg in 1863. The photographer, Timothy H. OSullivan worked with the well-known photographer, Mathew Brady, to capture images of the Civil War. The reason why I was drawn to this particular photograph, however, is because of the emphasis placed on the soldier lying on his back with his face upwards, pointing slightly towards the camera. His dead expression is very chilling. Another thing that drew me to this photograph is that you can see in the distance, the abundance of dead bes scattered across the war stricken field which added to the chilling mood of the photograph.

The painting above is not one I am familiar with, however, it caught my attention due to the similar withal different subject matter from the previous photograph. This painting is save chilling to me, however it portrays a different sense of risk of infection and struggle than the sense of defeat that I got from the photograph of the decease caused by the Battle at Gettysburg. Here you can see there is a crew of men who bearing to be stuck or thrown onto an ice structure. There are men who have been thrown off their ship or boat, who go down injured in the snow along with various items that were thrown off the ship as well.
