I Don't Get It - Absurd Humor in "White Ninja"

I Dont Get It.

For several years, a comic about The White Ninja by S. Bevan & K. Earle has been produce on a website, www.whiteninjacomics.com. The Ninja is a simple, somewhat scruffy order of payment of some sort of human being - he at least has eyes and a mouth. But the situations he gets himself in are usually completely absurd. This sort of surreal japery is an interesting genre and is difficult to excuse. The jokes are hard to hunt and can even be frustrating if you want to debate into the philosophic qualities of the humor. But these jokes are most often sincere and free spirited, juxtaposing completely unrelated subjects, but not position them in a situation where it will necessarily explain or ask questions about the subjects nature, similar in conventional cartoons. Rather, it confuses the testifyer and raises questions about perception and vulgar sense. One of the White Ninja strips shows the Ninja at a market where he embarks on a kiwi fruit who claims to be a werewolf. The Ninja asks the nocturnal beast of a fruit whether he catches mice. In a completely different scenario in the next frame, the kiwi crawls into a mouse hole holding a lighted match, to wear another kiwi - only this kiwi is deceased, and in the distance, in that location is a hostile squeek.




After reading the comic one time over, the reader will be confused, and will have to read over again, only to learn that he is still safe as confused. The author combines three irrelevant subjects into one: A kiwi, a werewolf and catching mice. If you add the fact that the Kiwi has the ability to speak, then we have more reason to be at wits end. In the first panel, the ninja comes out as a dim-witted character, asking a shop-assistant (most likely he could be anyone really) What are these? (Bevan & Earle). while pointing at a well-labeled stand of Kiwis. In the next panel, the Kiwi answers Im a werewolf (Bevan & Earle).
